Rudy Project - international news:
The excitement was tangible as the Pro Men took the start line of the Sunny King Criterium in downtown Anniston, Alabama this past Saturday night. With thousands of spectators lining the course, and many thousands more watching the video coverage streaming live online, there was ample motivation for riders to risk everything for the opportunity to be seen flying their team colors at the head of the race.
Racing was aggressive from the start and immediately two riders where able to slip away, dangling just seconds in front of the peloton. Riders from the Jamis/Sutter Home Professional Cycling Team were not worried, though, and knew it was just a matter of time before the break would be reabsorbed and more attempts would be made. As predicted, the two riders were swept up shortly before the halfway point and attacks began flying in earnest once again. Deciding on the fly that the race would most likely end in a field sprint, Jamis/Sutter Home riders Kyle Wamsley and Jackie Simes took turns covering moves while Demis Aleman sat back in the field to conserve as much energy as possible for finale.
Entering the final laps with the field all together, Kyle waited patiently with Demis on his wheel as other teams battled to control the front of the race. Then, with just two corners to go, Kyle made his move and jumped into the lead. Unfortunately, Demis lost his wheel in the scrum that ensued, and as a consequence, was forced farther back than anticipated. Kyle, realizing he was now alone, jumped with everything he had out of the last corner and was narrowly passed by just two riders to finish 3rd! Demis was able to recover well and make up ground to still finish a respectable 6th.
