Dylan Hattingh - a podium finish at the fourth XCO MTB Nationals in Pietermaritzburg

The fourth and final races in the 2012 National Cross Country Mountain Biking series was held at Worlds View, Pietermaritzburg on Saturday 23 June.  It seems to have become expected for big MTB races in Pietermaritzburg to be plagued by rain, but this time round there were fortunately only light showers despite the heavy cloud throughout the race and the day before.  The organisers prepared a course that was not excessively technical, but challenging enough to give a good reflection of the athletes' abilities.  Dylan did not have a good start, lying 7th after the start loop.  He was not feeling at his best, complaining of nausea.  Nonetheless, he steadily worked his way through the field over the five laps raced by the Juniors to finish on the podium in second place.  Dylan won the 1st race of the series in Cape Town in February, 4th at the second race in Pretoria in April and was 3rd at the third race in Addo a month later.  The national log points ranking is determined by the best results from three of the four races in the series.  With these results Dylan takes 3rd place overall on the national log in the Junior Men age category at the end of the 2012 national series.
